Announcing the 2018 Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race

Announcing the 2018 Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race

The Soldier Marathon Race Committee and the National Infantry Museum are pleased to announce that the Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will continue next year on November 17, 2018.

The National Infantry Museum has just unveiled its new Global War on Terrorism Memorial which faces the existing Viet Nam Wall Memorial. The Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will be memorial races to commemorate those soldiers who have paid the ultimate price to protect our Nation’s freedoms as well as to give their families and runners the opportunity to celebrate those lives that were so well lived.

The Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will both start and finish on Heritage Walk (Avenue of Flags) as the races have in the past, with the Global War on Terrorism Memorial on one side and the Viet Nam Wall Memorial on the other side. There will be a new race course. The course will run from the National Infantry Museum on the Riverwalk to Rotary Park (Bulldog Marina) and return on the Riverwalk to the National Infantry Museum to complete the 13.1 miles half marathon and the 3.1 miles 5k race. Relay teams of two runners may also run the half marathon.

The races being discontinued in 2018 will be the full Soldier Marathon, the Kids Soldier Marathon, the Soldier Virtual Marathon, and the Soldier Hand Crank races. Runner pushed strollers will continue to be permitted for the Soldier 5k Race in 2018 but not for the Soldier Half Marathon.

Runners also will not run on Fort Benning, Uptown Columbus or Phenix City in 2018. The reason for discontinuing the Soldier Marathon race was because planning the full distance marathon course and the other races was becoming too much a challenge for our volunteer committee and we decided it was time to retire the full marathon course, which included Fort Benning, Uptown Columbus and Phenix City as well as the other races. This new course for the Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will be much easier to manage by the volunteer race committee.

For those runners who signed up for one of the 2017 Soldier Marathon races to be run on November 18, 2017 because we previously announced this was the last year for the Soldier Marathon races, and now would rather run next year in 2018, we will offer deferrals to our runners to the 2018 race if they wish.

Registration for the 2018 Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will be available at the National Infantry Museum at packet pickup for the 2017 races on Friday and Saturday, November 17 and 18, 2017.
